Questions and Answers

What is the difference between an Ignition Lock Cylinder and an Electronic Ignition Switch?

They perform two entirely different jobs, though they work together:

  • Ignition Lock Cylinder: This is the mechanical metal tumbler where you physically insert and turn your car key.
  • Electronic Ignition Switch: This is the plastic electrical module containing wiring connectors that bolts directly to the back of the lock cylinder. When you turn the key, this switch routes power to your starter, fuel pump, and accessories.
  • Please check the listing title and photos carefully to see if you are purchasing the mechanical lock cylinder, the electrical switch module, or the entire combined assembly.
Will this replacement ignition lock cylinder come with a key?
Yes. If you are purchasing an ignition lock cylinder assembly, it will include at least one matching key as pictured in the listing photos. If you are buying only the electronic ignition switch backend plastic module, no keys are included or needed, as you will simply bolt it to your car's original lock cylinder.
Will my car start immediately after installing this new key and lock cylinder?

It depends on your vehicle's anti-theft system.

  • For older vehicles (typically pre-2000): Yes, it is purely mechanical and will start right away.
  • For modern vehicles with transponder keys (chips inside the key): No. Your car's computer (PCM/Immobilizer) is programmed to look for the digital code inside your old key. If you try to start the car with the new key, the engine will crank but shut off, or a security light will flash. You will need to have a mobile locksmith or dealer program the new key to your car, or swap your old key's internal chip into the new key casing.
Can I re-key this new cylinder so I can keep using my original door keys?
Yes, if you are purchasing a mechanical lock cylinder. If you do not want to carry two separate keys (one for the ignition and one for the doors), you can take our replacement cylinder and your original factory key to a professional locksmith. They can easily re-tumble the new cylinder to match your original key configuration prior to installation.
Why does the plastic housing or wire insulation look slightly dusty in the photos?
Ignition switches live buried deep inside the steering column shroud, where they trap static electricity, dust, and microscopic fabric fibers over years of driving. Any minor cosmetic dust or superficial scuffing on the plastic housing is normal. Every switch is thoroughly bench-tested to ensure all internal electrical contact points snap into place cleanly and conduct voltage perfectly across all key positions (Accessory, On, Start).
Will this switch fix a vehicle that completely loses power intermittently while driving?
Yes, a failing electrical ignition switch is one of the most common causes of a vehicle randomly dying or losing dashboard accessory power while driving. If the internal copper contact points wear out, engine vibrations or a heavy keychain can break the circuit momentarily, tricking the car into thinking you turned the key off.
